Squad strength is key to success Win moves Silkmen up to fifth in league/ Match report inside

- SHELDAN KEAY

MACCLESFIELD Town assistant manager Steve Watson believes the strength in depth in the squad is starting to show after Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Woking.

Goals from Danny Whitaker, Danny Rowe and Chris Holroyd ensured that the Silkmen took all three points at the Moss Rose, despite a second half strike from Dennon Lewis for the visitors.

Macc have now moved into the play-off places after winning five of their first eight matches in the National League – and Watson feels that the players available to them is a key factor.

“We’ve got good players in every position now so if somebody gets injured there are people we can bring in,” he said.

“There is no point having a decent squad if we can’t freshen things up.

“We had big perfor- mances against Solihull Moors on Monday, but then freshened things up against Woking and it worked.”

It turned out to be a straightforward win for Macc over Woking – but Watson did have a few slight concerns when the visitors pulled a goal back in the second half.

“It didn’t turn out to be as comfortable as I had hoped at half-time, and we were disappointed to concede from a strike that we should have closed down,” he said.

“When we were 2-0 up we battled the elements and scored two goals with the wind against us.

“I thought in the second half we would create more chances.

“Woking came out after a ‘meeting’ at half-time, though, and worked a lot more and caused us more problems, so fair play to them.

“We weren’t happy with the amount of corners we were conceding but we defended the set pieces well. We could have nicked a couple of goals from our own set pieces and I thought Ollie Norburn’s deliveries were excellent, but we just didn’t have any lads there to get on the end of them.”

Macclesfield have one of the best goals-scored record in the league so far, with only top of the table Forest Green, fellow play-off hopefuls Lincoln City and ninth placed Gateshead having scored more times this season.
