Fundraisers turn the town pink

- KAREN BRITTON

BURLY doormen will be among those in the pink at events across Macclesfield for a town-wide charity event.

Macclesfield will be awash with pink when residents don bright tutus and other accessories for Paint Macc Pink events at businesses and venues across the town in aid of charity ‘Prevent Breast Cancer’, formally Genesis.

There will be a series of fundraising events with participants from Sunday, September 25 to Sunday, October 2.

And more than 30 ven- ues are expected to take part in a special big night out at clubs and bars across Macclesfield to act as a finale to the event.

Door staff at the town’s nightlife establishments will be among those dressed up for the cause, based at Wythenshawe Hospital, which is dedicated to predicting and preventing breast cancer.

The event team – which includes Matthew Till, Ben Vincent, Keith Townley, Ian Bentley and Stuart Bailey – are working in conjunction with door staff in Macclesfield, many of whom have a personal connection with the charity.

Matthew said: “Last year we were overwhelmed by support.

“One small event ballooned into over 20 venues coming together to support the cause and raised £3,059.85.

“This year more local businesses and venues have asked to get involved, which is brilliant as it will help create more awareness about breast cancer and the charity.”

An event at Society Bar on Dukes Court kickstarted the campaign, with Irene Lea on hand to take pictures at a photo shoot for people to find out more and raise awareness.

Paint Macc Pink starts on Sunday, September 25 with a dedicated stall and collections at the Treacle Market, followed by numerous events running over the week, including a ‘Sing Macc Pink’ event at St Michael’s Church at 7.30pm on Friday, September 30.

It leads up to Saturday, October 1 when pubs and bars will be holding numerous events as part of the big ‘Pink Night Out’ encouraging everyone to venture out on the Saturday night wearing something pink.

Donations are welcome throughout October as it’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The team will also be at Treacle Market on Sunday, October 30, where they will be announcing this year’s total.
