Lemon curd display is show stopper

-

HUNDREDS turned out at this year’s Sutton Ex-Servicemen’s Annual Flower and Vegetable Show.

Organisers report more than 500 people attended the golden 50th anniversary show in a marquee at Spooners Flats, Hollin Lane, Sutton to see flowers, vegetables, cakes and crafts displayed in competitions for various categories. There were 203 entrants who submitted more than 1,000 entries.

A new addition to the show was what was billed as the ‘World Lemon Cheese Championships’ to find the best lemon curd around.

The championship was set up with a trophy in memory of Dorothy Bayley who would often win the lemon curd category at the show when she was alive.

Roger Lomas took the trophy home this year.

Marshall Barnard, 66, show treasurer who lives with wife Kathryn on Morton Drive, Sutton, said: “The show was tremendous. It’s grown and grown.

“The highlight was the world lemon cheese championships, we were delighted to attract entries from all around. We hope the event will raise money for charity.

“We had the brass band playing, a fabulous art competition and there was a really good atmosphere.

“It’s a true community event.”

Sutton WI won the scarecrow competition which also took place as part of the show.

Next year’s show is on Sunday, September 3.
