Relaxing day on greens for finals

THE finals day for the Manchester Past Lady Captains was a very relaxed affair, blessed by superb weather at North Manchester Golf Club – the home club of the Past Captain’s captain, Margaret Ashworth.

In the final were Styal’s Aileen Holohan and Claire Whitney, and Michelle Baines and Barbara Hudson, of Ashtonunde­r-Lyne.

Marking for the Styal pair were Sophie Casey and Yvonne Chadwick, of Sale, and the Ashton duo were accompanie­d by MDLGA president Chris Kelly, of Bramhall, and Lynda Skilton.

It was a memorable day for Chris, who holed her tee shot on the par three 18th for a well-celebrated ace – a bottle of champagne her reward.

The event included guests from North Manchester, Lady President Pat Chadwick and Lady Captain Doreen Hallam.

The winners were Aileen and Claire with a fine score of 37 points, with Michele and Barbara posting 30.

The Fred Daly Putter is one of Macclesfie­ld Golf Club’s most fiercely contested ‘major’ competitio­ns with the winner receiving the putter given to the club by one of British golf’s true legends.

The event has received consistent support with sponsorshi­p from PR Jones Jewellers and on hand to present the putter to the winner were the Jones family members Mickey, David and Greeba.

The winner was 19-handicappe­r, Peter Ainsworth, with his nett 64 taking him clear of Stuart Purves, who won a cpo on 67 from Rob Higgins and captain Neil Jackson 69. Burns on 69.

But the overall outstandin­g winner with a total of 132 was Liam Campbell, from John Bamford 137 and Bradley Cooke 139.

Davenport Ladies played a Rose Bowl qualifier and topping the divisions were Luisa Bryceland, 71, Irene Taylor, 73, and Pauline Peart, 76.

The familiar name of Graeme Nimmo led in the latest Thursday Stableford at Shrigley Hall posting 38 points, one more than Steve Brooks with Gill Kershaw and John Hogan next in with 33.

The Laurie Thornton Challenge at Mottram Hall saw Gareth Hall in top spot with 39 points, chased by Sam Stapleton 38 and Andy Hamlett and Robert Parry, both 37.

A Saturday Stableford at Styal saw division one led in by Simon Tracey after a cpo on 35 points, with David Chapman and Mark Mynes.

In division two Dennis Chester was out on his own with 37 points, five more than Brian Weems, Gavin Jamieson, Chris Hudson, Andrew Murray and Joseph Wee.

Styal seniors played a siMp singles Stableford with Ian Mills leading in with 40 points from Gordon Hamil ilton 39 and Phil Moore 38.

The Balmoral Shield was played for by Macclesfie­ld’s men, and Jamie Baker was on fire posting 63 to lead in from Andy Baker 65, Jake Bowers 66 and Paul Tovee 68.

Alderley Edge’s men played for the President’s Prize, and it was won by Andy Wells with a nett 63 from Nigel Pugh and Barry Lewis, both 65.

Edge’s ladies played a BB Stableford and top of the shop with 41 points were J Ricketts and J Hardcastle, just a point ahead of L McGuire and O Davies, and H Edwards and A Thornber.

Davenport’s men enjoyed a busy President’s weekend and in round one the pace was set by Craig Lloyd and Liam Campbell, both 66, and Philip Gardener 67.

A medal for Styal ladies had Eileen Elliott on fire with 65, seeing her well clear of Pat Chadwick, 69, and Enid Laverty, 74.

Prestbury Ladies played a par competitio­n for the Ferguson Bowl and it proved to be a real thriller as Deborah Baker won a cpo on -1 from Cheshire star, Gill Mellor, and Trish Hunt, with Linda Buckley next in on -2. In the subsidiary Stableford Barbara Boyd led in with 35 points, two more than Jane Campaigne and Elaine Fawkes.

Prestbury Golf Club is hosting a ‘Girls Golf Rocks’ free taster session on Saturday, September 17, from 2-4pm with their teaching profession­al Mark Pilling.

There is no need to bring equipment, just wear comfy clothes and join in the fun.

Bramall Park Golf Club was in magnificen­t condition to stage the second oldest competitio­n in the Cheshire calendar as 60 players battled for the Cheshire Foursomes Trophy for the best gross score over 36 holes, and the Victory Trophy for the best nett score.

Round one saw the hot favourites Josh McMahon (Wallasey) and Sam Prince (Northenden) post 66, a score matched by Cheshire team captain Chris Harrison (Sandiway) and Chris Chilton (High Legh Park), with home pair George Seed and Chris Murthi two shots off their pace.

But the second round saw the tables tilt in favour of the consistent Crewe pair of John Kendall, a recent recruit for Staffordsh­ire, and Robert Reid, who added 67 to their opening 69 for what proved to be a winning score of 136 – two shots clear of Michael Harrington (Mottram Hall) and Ashley Sage (Sandiway) and Sam Prince and Josh McMahon.

The Victory Cup for the best nett score was also won by the dynamic Crewe duo with their 135 haul taking them two shots clear of father and son pair, Alan and Jon Beesley (Mere), and Colin and Kevin Brown (Bromboroug­h).

The trophies were presented by former Cheshire president Colin Shadbolt, from the host club, and he also presented a county plaque to Bramall Park captain, Stephen Williams, in recognitio­n of his club hosting the competitio­n, which was first played for in 1923 at Delamere Forest GC.
