McDonald’s roof falls in as storm rages

AWOMAN was injured when the ceiling of a restaurant collapsed on her during a storm.

The victim was sat in McDonald’s on Hulley Road, Macclesfie­ld, when she was struck on the head just before midnight on September 13.

Staff evacuated the building and called for an ambulance, but the woman left before paramedics arrived.

The incident happened as a violent storm battered the region causing severe flooding, including Pexhill Road near Broken Cross, and transport chaos to roads and the railways.

Jessica Palmer, 24, was in the McDonald’s drivethru when she heard a “massive crash and a scream”.

She said: “There was a mass of rubble. Water was pouring down and there were wires hanging down. There were a group of girls, aged 18 to 21, sat beneath the collapsed part.

“One of them suffered a head injury. She was evidently in shock.”

McDonald’s closed the business for three days while they carried out repairs.

A spokesman for the restaurant chain said: “Our Macclesfie­ld restaurant closed due to damage sustained from the recent bad weather.

“An ambulance was called for a customer who sustained an injury, but she had left on foot prior to its arrival.

“We are pleased to hear that the customer has been checked over since and is doing well.”

Macclesfie­ld library closed for part of Wednesday, September 14 due to damage from overnight flooding, while Vets4Pets at Lyme Green Retail Park also closed because of suffered water damage.

A dead dog, believed to be a Staffordsh­ire bull terrier or similar, was found near the Gas Road underpass on September 14.

Ben Marshall reported the grim discovery to Environmen­tal Health officers.

He said: “It’s really sad. It looks like it has been swept away by the flooding.”

Macclesfie­ld Town FC’s league match against Wrexham had to be called off as the pitch inside the Moss Rose stadium was flooded.

Richard Hudson’s son Noah was due to start his job as a ballboy at the Macclesfie­ld Town game.

He said: “Ironically the match had to be cancelled due to flooding.

“I’ll get him started on woodwork lessons.”
