De­men­tia care unit opens

ACHARITY has opened its brand new day care cen­tre for peo­ple with de­men­tia.

Age UK Cheshire East has ex­panded its de­men­tia day sup­port ser­vice, which will run from a newly re­fur­bished cen­tre on Hen­der­son Street.

The cen­tre, which is open from 9.30pm un­til 4pm Mon­day to Fri­day, will of­fer a wide range of ac­tiv­i­ties com­bin­ing men­tal, phys­i­cal and so­cial stim­u­la­tion, in­clud­ing arts and craft, rem­i­nis­cence, quizzes, bak­ing, falls preven­tion, mu­sic ther­apy and day trips.

In­di­vid­u­als at­tend­ing for the day will also get re­fresh­ments and a hot lunch.

Macclesfield MP David Rut­ley was among the guests in­vited along to the of­fi­cial open­ing, where he and guests were given a sneak pre­view of the ser­vices avail­able.

Mr Rut­ley said: “This new fa­cil­ity is vi­tal for those liv­ing with de­men­tia and their fam­i­lies in Macclesfield and the wider Cheshire East.

“I con­grat­u­late Age UK Cheshire East and its part­ners for all their hard work in mak­ing this pos­si­ble. It will be a much val­ued ser­vice in the years ahead.”

The cen­tre will pro­vide a sup­port ser­vice be­tween 9.30am and 4pm Mon­day to Fri­day, ex­clud­ing bank hol­i­days, with three small groups each day.

Trans­port can be ar­ranged through the charity’s brand new minibus or with a vol­un­teer driver.

Da­mon Tay­lor, chief ex­ec­u­tive said: “We are ex­tremely proud to open the doors to our brand new ser­vice which will en­able us to help a higher num­ber of lo­cal older peo­ple liv­ing with de­men­tia, and their car­ers.”

The charity has been able to re­fur­bish a build­ing in the heart of Macclesfield thanks to the gen­eros­ity of a num­ber of fun­ders in­clud­ing the Garfield We­ston Foun­da­tion, Robert McAlpine Foun­da­tion, the Cloth- worker’s Foun­da­tion, Cheshire East Coun­cil, the Francis Win­ham Foun­da­tion, Bernard Sun­ley Char­i­ta­ble Foun­da­tion, WG Ed­wards Char­i­ta­ble Foun­da­tion and The Beatrice Laing Foun­da­tion.

The Bag­u­ley fam­ily, whose mum Joan used to use the day care ser­vice in Macclesfield, have also con­trib­uted to­wards the new minibus.
