ACHARITY has opened its brand new day care centre for people with dementia.

Age UK Cheshire East has expanded its dementia day support service, which will run from a newly refurbished centre on Henderson Street.

The centre, which is open from 9.30pm until 4pm Monday to Friday, will offer a wide range of activities combining mental, physical and social stimulation, including arts and craft, reminiscence, quizzes, baking, falls prevention, music therapy and day trips.

Individuals attending for the day will also get refreshments and a hot lunch.

Macclesfield MP David Rutley was among the guests invited along to the official opening, where he and guests were given a sneak preview of the services available.

Mr Rutley said: “This new facility is vital for those living with dementia and their families in Macclesfield and the wider Cheshire East.

“I congratulate Age UK Cheshire East and its partners for all their hard work in making this possible. It will be a much valued service in the years ahead.”

The centre will provide a support service between 9.30am and 4pm Monday to Friday, excluding bank holidays, with three small groups each day.

Transport can be arranged through the charity’s brand new minibus or with a volunteer driver.

Damon Taylor, chief executive said: “We are extremely proud to open the doors to our brand new service which will enable us to help a higher number of local older people living with dementia, and their carers.”

The charity has been able to refurbish a building in the heart of Macclesfield thanks to the generosity of a number of funders including the Garfield Weston Foundation, Robert McAlpine Foundation, the Cloth- worker’s Foundation, Cheshire East Council, the Francis Winham Foundation, Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation, WG Edwards Charitable Foundation and The Beatrice Laing Foundation.

The Baguley family, whose mum Joan used to use the day care service in Macclesfield, have also contributed towards the new minibus.
