Ill-discipline costs Blues a bonus point
NATIONAL LEAGUE 1 MACCLESFIELD RUFC 19 HULL IONIANS .............. 29
HULL Ionians ran out as winners against Macclesfield at Priory Park. The game started evenly for the first 15 minutes, with neither side able to assert any dominance to carve out an opportunity or even get themselves out of second gear.
This was until the 16th minute when Sam Broster drove over in the corner for the Blues after some goal line pressure. The visitors were soon back on level pegging after they drove over from a maul in the 25th minute.
After that the game returned to its scrappy nature, littered with handling errors meaning that the game was tied 5-5 at the break.
Hull were the first to draw blood after the half, again profiting from a driving maul after a string of penalties against Macc.
The stream of penalties resulted in Matt King sent to the sin bin for Macclesfield with half an hour remaining.
Hull made the man advantage count as Stephen Slingsby crossed after Hull cut through the Blues backline.
Dan Tai Sen then secured the bonus point on 60 minutes after showing some serious pace to score under the posts, making the score 26-5 to Hull.
The Blues hit back in the 68th minute, after Tom Mantell bulldozed his way under the posts. Macc then added another try as King dived onto a grubber kick behind the line.
Ill-discipline cost Macclesfield a losing bonus point as Hull Fly Half Lee Millar slotted a penalty in the last minute of the game.
Next up for Hull is Blackheath at home whilst Macclesfield travel to Blaydon.
