Askey in the market for bargain strikers

- SHELDAN KEAY

MACCLESFIELD Town manager John Askey hopes to bring in some new forward options in the coming weeks, but admits that finances may restrict him from doing that.

Askey is known for having to work with a limited budget, with a number of other sides in the division having more money available to them.

While it seems like he may be unable to add to his squad, the Silkmen boss insists that he is happy putting the faith in Chris Holroyd for the time being.

“Ideally we’d bring two or three centre-forwards in, but they have to be the right ones, at the right price,” he said. “We’re not able to do that right now, and to be honest Chris Holroyd has done great so far this season.”

Holroyd has netted three times for Macclesfield so far this season, including a goal in the 2-1 victory over Guiseley on Saturday. The 29-year-old joined the Silkmen in 2013 and has gone on to make over 100 appearances for the club.

One player that Askey has signed recently is goalkeeper Scott Flinders, who has arrived on a one-month loan deal from York City.

Flinders made his Macc debut during the 2-1 victory over Guiseley on Saturday, and Askey is confident that he can continue to impress during his time with the club.

“Scott’s come in, he’s got loads of experience and he became available. We’re trying to improve things all the time, and hopefully Scott will do that for us,” he said.

“It has to be right, and you want the right characters as well. We ask around and we’ll add to the group, but we’re strong in every position this year, which will hopefully result in us getting the right results.”
