Gaffer delighted with flying start

- SHELDAN KEAY

MACCLESFIELD Town manager John Askey feels his team have made their best start to a National League season for a long time.

The Silkmen had taken 21 points from their opening 11 games ahead of their match with Wrexham as the Express went to press on Tuesday.

Their last game saw them pick up a 2-1 victory over Guiseley, and Askey hopes the team continue to climb the table in the coming weeks.

“This is the best start we’ve had for a long time. We’ve had to play clubs who have bigger resources than ourselves so it’s really pleasing. We’re playing well and have lots of confidence so hopefully that can continue,” he told the club’s official website.

“We started off well in our last game against Guiseley and got the two goals. We then allowed them to get back into the game when we weren’t at our best but it’s a good three points.

“We didn’t play particularly well but as a team we worked hard and defensively we were quite solid. It’s another win away from home too.

“Ollie got the winner which was nice for him. When Mitch came on, he did a solid job for us. He’s played over 30 games in the championship so you know he’s got the quality.”

Macclesfield’s re-arranged match with Wrexham was set to take place last night (Tuesday), and Askey was expecting a tough game.

“It’s a different game and every game you have to start off fresh. Wrexham have had some really iffy results so hopefully we can capitalise on that,” he said.

Wrexham headed into the match with the Silkmen following a 0-0 draw with their nearby rivals Chester on Saturday, leaving Wrexham in 14th place in the table ahead of the game at the Moss Rose.

Meanwhile, young Macclesfield defender Dan Cowan has joined Ashton United on a one-month loan deal in order to get some more game time.

Cowan has been a regular in the Silkmen match day squad this season, and was involved in the games against Lincoln City and Solihull Moors.

He has linked up with a former Macclesfield defender at Ashton, after Will Haning was appointed as jointmanager of the club last week.

Cowan made his debut for Ashton on Saturday, but he couldn’t help his new side get the three points, as the team suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Rushall Olympic.
