High flying Chan takes to the air
New shield at bowling club
A HIGH-FLYING fundraiser has been hurtling through the air again in aid of a nurses charity.
Chan Spratt chose to volunteer and fundraise for Marie Curie after receiving support from the charity when her husband of 50 years Ron was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2014. He died the same year.
Chan, who is in her 70s, strapped herself to a plane and flew through the sky on a wing walk in memory of Ron.
Now she’s taken part in her latest challenge, taking on the longest zip wire in Europe,
She said: “Marie Curie nurse terminally ill people in the comfort of their own home whilst giving much needed respite to the family.
“Growing old is inevitable but you don’t have to act or feel old so why not keep fit and have fun and at the same time BOWLERS came from a variety of clubs to take part in a new competition.
Bollington Bowling Club, in conjunction with Unsworth Funeral Services, hosted the inaugural Unsworth Shield and invited members from local clubs to take part.
It was a partnership between two Bollington organisations, with Unsworth Funeral Services based on Palmerston street in the town.
It was held to present help a worthwhile charity.
“It’s thanks to all you wonderful people friends family neighbours and strangers alike that sponsor me with my mad cap idea’s that enables me to raise so much money.”
Chan has taken on a variety of fundraising challenges since getting involved with Marie Curie. Completing the zip wire means Chan has been able to provide 100 hours of nursing care to those who need it most across Cheshire after raising £2,031. The wing walk in 2015 raised a massive £6,061.
Jessica Herrington, community fundraiser, said: “Chan never fails to amaze me with her fundraising activity. She has gone above and beyond for the charity. The money raised will help to continue to give care to terminally ill people in their homes, just like Chan experienced.” the first annual Unsworth Shield, with pairs of bowlers registered with either Macclesfield and District or Alderley Edge and District Bowling Associations.
The competition was held on the green at Bollington Recreation Ground, the home of Bollington Bowling Club.
There was prize money totalling £400 and the contest attracted 32 entrants. The winners were Ant Dingle from Bollington Bowling Club and Mike Collier from the Pack Horse Bowling Club,

Roger Johnson, from Bollington Bowling Club, said club members were delighted that it was a successful first event.
He said: “It was held in glorious weather and the standard of bowling particularly in the later rounds was exceptionally high.
“Besides the annual shield the winners received £100, with runners up Ian Peers and Eddie Williams receiving £50.”
