Theatre boss takes on Ken
A MACCLESFIELD theatre owner is going head to head with Hollywood heavyweright Kenneth Branagh for an award.
William Whelton, a former All Hallows pupil, runs Hope Mill Theatre in Manchester with Joseph Houston.
Their efforts to transform a former mill into a 150-seat theatre has resulting in them being shortlisted for a Hospital Club award for their contribution to Theatre and Performance.
But the couple face stiff opposition and will go up against Kenneth Branagh for his work in Hollywood with the hit film Thor.
Cynthia Erivo, who won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical for her performance in the Broadway revival of The Color Purple, is also in the same category.
William, 26, said: “Hope Mill Theatre has been a lot of sleepless nights and hard work.
“The saying “blood, sweat and tears” has never rung so true.
“Being nominated in the same category as Kenneth Branagh and Cynthia Erivo is awarding enough.”
William trained as an actor in London and met Joseph while touring in shows across Australia.
The Hospital Club awards aim to celebrate those who have made an impact on creative industries. Categories also include film, music, gaming, art design & craft, broadcast, advertising & PR, fashion and publishing.
