The move by Historic England, formerly known as English Heritage, means that the memorial and the area surrounding gets special protection from development.

The memorial is in the churchyard of St George’s on Fountain Close off London Road South. It commemorates the 33 Poynton servicemen who died in the First World War. An additional 31 names from those who died in the Second World War were added later. Another name was added in 2012.

The granite memorial was unveiled in 1920 by Lord Vernon and comprises a Latin cross enriched with carved scrollwork decorative details on the cross and collar. The plinth carries the black leaded inscriptions.

The listing is part of an ambition by Historic England to protect 2,500 memorials by 2018, marking the centenary of the First World War.

Roger Bowdler, director of listing at Historic England, said: “Researching, recording and recommending up to 2,500 more war memorials for listing over the next five years is a major task but one that Historic England is proud to undertake. These memorials will gain a place on the National Heritage List for England to tell the story of this country’s sacrifice and struggle.” ●● POYNTON Methodist Church’s preschool is holding a Baby Boot Sale on Saturday November 19 from 9am to 12pm.
