Wrexham routed at Moss Rose

- VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE

MACCLESFIELD Town picked up one of their most impressive victories of the season so far after comfortably defeating Wrexham last Tuesday.

Two goals from Danny Whitaker along with a header from Paul Lewis was enough to earn the Silkmen all three points at the Moss Rose.

The win moved Macclesfield up to third place, and assistant manager Steve Watson was delighted with the side.

“They’ve done everything we’ve asked them to do, we knew it was a big game and what was at stake,” he told the club’s official website.

“We kept a clean sheet scored some good goals and if it wasn’t for Shwan Jalal in goal then maybe it would have been a bit more comfortable.”

Jalal was lining up for Wrexham against his former side, and he was called into action early on in the game when he had to keep out Danny Rowe’s long range effort.

Macclesfield continued to dictate play in the opening stages, with Whitaker seeing an effort cleared off the line by Curtis Tilt.

The Silkmen still had to be alert at the other end though, with Sean Newton going close when he headed wide after getting on the end of John Rooney’s corner.

Macc eventually made the breakthrough just before half-time when Whitaker got his first goal of the evening.

He fired a 20 yard effort past Jalal and into the back of the net to make it 1-0 to the home side at the interval.

It didn’t take the Silkmen long to double their lead in the second half, with their next goal coming on 47 minutes.

Whitaker turned provider on this occasion, with his cross into the box smartly headed home by Lewis.

Macclesfield were in control at this stage, and they almost made it three when Holroyd tried his luck, but he was superbly matched by Jalal.

The Wrexham goalkeeper couldn’t keep out the hosts for much longer though as confusion in their defence allowed Whitaker to burst through and slot the ball home to grab his second of the evening.

Macc didn’t have to do much defending in the closing stages, with Wrexham’s only real chance coming when Mark Carrington headed wide.

There was almost another goal for the Silkmen in the final moments when Rowe forced another good save out of Jalal, but in the end Macclesfield had to settle for a comfortable 3-0 victory.
