Askey hits out at ‘easy’ claims

- SHELDAN KEAY

MACCLESFIELD Town manager John Askey has dismissed claims that his side have had an easy start to the National League season.

The Silkmen were in third place ahead of their match with Barrow as the Express went to print on Tuesday.

Some observers believe that the fixtures have worked in Macc’s favour, but Askey is quick to reject those suggestions.

“There are no easy starts in this league. We’ll see at the end of the season whether we’ve had an easy start or not,” he said.

“It doesn’t matter who we play, and we’ve done really well against the supposed better teams in the past.

“We know that if everybody works hard in our team then we can match anybody. For a club like ourselves to be where we are in the league is great, so hopefully we can keep it going.”

The Silkmen made it six wins from their last seven games on Saturday when they picked up a 1-0 victory over North Ferriby United at the Moss Rose, with Danny Whitaker getting the only goal of the match.

Macc had to battle hard to win the game after John McCombe was sent off inside the opening half hour, and Askey was unsure about the decision.

“John McCombe’s red card is difficult to judge so we’ll have to have a look on the video, but I think there were one or two things that were debateable, even our penalty,” he said.

“We have got to overcome these things though and we did.

“We had struggled up until that point so I don’t know if our players thought we were better than what we are because of the Wrexham game.

“When McCombe was sent off we probably played our best football, and on another day we could have scored two or three goals.

“Scott Flinders has been doing well in net and has brought that experience. He was terrific with anything he had to do and was calm and collected.

“Danny Rowe was unlucky with a few chances, as was Danny Whitaker, but it’s all about winning so everybody is happy.”

Macclesfield are set to face North Ferriby again soon after the two teams were drawn against each other in the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup.

The Silkmen will have to travel on this occasion, with the match set to take place at Grange Lane on Saturday 15 October.
