Haigh gets professional career off to a flyer
MACCLESFIELD boxer Jake Haigh made a successful start to his professional career after knocking out Tomas Kugler on Saturday.
Haigh was dominant in the fight, stopping his opponent in the second round of their bout at Fenton Manor Sports Complex in Stoke-onTrent.
The 22-year-old had an impressive amateur career, and has now made a smooth transition into the paid ranks.
Haigh is trained by boxing legend Ricky Hatton, and he was delighted with what he saw from the supermiddleweight.
“It was a great start to his professional career. It was a good performance and he was very relaxed,” said Hatton.
“It was a great show in Stoke that was really well supported, so we will be back again soon.”
It was a perfect night for Haigh, as several of his stablemates were also victorious on the bill.
In the main event, Nathan Gorman won the Central Area heavyweight title after knocking out David Howe in the first round.
It was the first title of Gorman’s career, who has now moved to 6-0, with five of those wins coming by stoppage.
Craig Morris also picked up his first belt after he defeated previously undefeated Nathan McIntosh to win the Midlands Area welterweight title.
The fight went the distance, with Morris winning 98-94 on points to extend his unbeaten record to 7-0.
Two more of Haigh’s stable also claimed wins after light-middleweight Sam Evans stopped Andrej Cepur in the sixth round of their bout, while Chris Blaney beat Mark Till on points after four rounds.
