Pupils and staff at school raise their coffee cups to cancer fight
PUPILS and staff at Tytherington School have raised almost £2,000 for a cancer charity.
A charity coffee morning held in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support was organised by Cath Linakar, Macmillan’s assistant head of ethos in the northwest, as part of a series of fundraising events to drum up as much cash as possible for the worthy cause.
The event included a raffle with a name-the-turtle competition, the chance of winning the cute, cuddly toy causing people to dig deep and raising hundreds of pounds alone.
Other fundraising activities pupils and staff have taken part in throughout the year include non-uniform days, where pupils donate a nominal amount for the privilege of wearing their own clothes for the day, a series of cake sales, and assemblies to raise people’s awareness of the important work that the charity does.
Headteacher Manny Botwe also showed that it is never too early in the day for cake, by dedicating one of his regular breakfasts celebrating students’ achievements to Macmillan.
He said: “We are all delighted here at the school by the amount of money that we have raised for Macmillan at the coffee morning, as well as that which we have raised for other charities.
“Last year the student body raised more than £12,000 for a range of different, worthwhile causes. These ranged from East Cheshire Hospice to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender rights charity Stonewall. Students always take on the task of leading and organising the whole of the fundraising days themselves.
“This is so we can ensure that we are able to get as many people involved in the events as possible.”
Mr Botwe added: “I am very proud to be the headteacher of a school where the students are all so community minded.”
Coffee mornings held in aid of Macmillan across the country have so far raised a massive £5,533,661 this year, with the ‘World’s Biggest Coffee Morning’ held to raise much needed funds for the charity on Friday, September 30.
