MACCLESFIELD Town were beaten for the fifth time this season after a disappointing defeat at home against Boreham Wood.

Second half goals from Kenny Davis and Danny Woodards were enough to condemn the Silkmen to a loss at the Moss Rose.

Macclesfield are now in fifth place in the National League table after coming up short, and assistant manager Steve Watson admits they can’t have any complaints with the outcome.

“I think the result is probably what we deserved on this occasion,” he said.

“We’ve defended a lot better than that this season and didn’t do anything different in training to when we’ve been beating teams 3-0, so it’s one of those scratch your head days.”

Macclesfield had more of the ball in the opening stages of the match, and went close when Paul Lewis fired a shot wide.

Danny Rowe was the next to threaten, also hitting an effort off target as the Silkmen looked to make a breakthrough.

Macc still had to be alert at the other end, with Bruno Andrade forcing a good save out of Scott Flinders after his shot took a big deflection on the way through.

John Askey’s side were then dealt a blow when they were forced into making a substitution after just 22 minutes.

Ollie Norburn appeared to suffer a knee injury after landing awkwardly, with Andy Halls coming on to replace him.

The Silkmen were still creating chances despite the setback, as Danny Whitaker shot wide from the edge of the box.

Rowe then blazed an effort over the crossbar just before the interval, meaning the two teams went into half-time with the match goalless.

Boreham Wood were the better team at the start of the second half, beginning when Daniel Uchechi headed over from close range after getting on the end of a free kick.

The visitors continued to dictate play, forcing the Silkmen defence to make a number of crucial tackles and interception.

Uchechi went close again after good work from Andrade, but he was denied by a good save from Flinders.

Boreham Wood goalkeeper Grant Smith was then called into action at the other end, keeping out Chris Holroyd’s attempt.

David Fitzpatrick came on for Mitch Hancox just after the hour mark, but he didn’t make the impact he would have wanted.

He fouled Andrade in the box, forcing the referee to point to the spot and award Boreham Wood a penalty.

Davis stepped up and slotted the spot kick into the back of the net to make it 1-0 to the away side after 70 minutes.

Macc tried to immediately hit back, and almost found a goal when Paul Lewis was inches away from getting on the end of a dangerous cross.

‘We have defended a lot better than that this season... it’s one of those scratch your head days’

Boreham Wood added insult to injury though when they doubled their lead on 82 minutes, as Woodards headed home from a corner late on.

The Silkmen couldn’t pull one back in the closing stages of the game, meaning they suffered a 2-0 defeat.
