Emma picks up wood skills and new friends at support centre
A TENANT at the Rossendale Trust has been making garden planters after learning new woodworking skills.
Emma Heard has been attending woodwork classes at Oakwood, the charity’s day service which runs activities for its users and tenants. She brought some big plans with her into the lessons.
Emma has been designing and making large-scale garden planters, learning new skills and how to use tools such as drills and saws under supervision from the skilled staff at Oakwood.
It has been a shared project and Emma has made new friends while at work.
She said: “I like making things for people and working in woodwork, it’s great.”
Oakwood is a day activity service where adults with learning and physical disabilities can sign up to courses ranging from cooking to media skills. It provides the chance to meet new people in a relaxed environment and learn along the way.
The activity groups are small so that the activity leaders can focus on supporting people such as Emma to learn at their own pace.
Oakwood manager Jason Blythe said: “Emma has grown so much in her short time with us. Her confidence and skills are flourishing here.”
Oakwood has grown rapidly over the last 18 months, providing a service to some of the most vulnerable people from Rossendale and from the wider community.
It’s based in Sutton and provides care and support for adults with learning and physical disabilities.
