Society celebrates 61st anniversar­y

THE 61st Annual Dinner for the Manchester and District Golf Captains, organised by Dave Sanders (Reddish Vale) and his team proved to be a great occasion at the Midland Hotel attended by 125 members and guests.

The principal guests were Keith MacIntosh, the Captain of the R and A and Marian Rae the President of England Golf who were led into the dining room by Manchester Captain Brian Ashfield of Chapel en le Frith Golf club.

The toast to the Society was proposed by Keith, who gave a great insight into the work involved with his role and the response was made by Brian who thanked all who had worked so hard behind the scenes during his enjoyable time in office.

He wished his successors Geoff Sable (Whitefield) the 2017 Captain and David Besant-Roberts (Chorlton) the 2017 President every success in the coming year.

Brian then announced that the 62nd Annual Dinner would be held at The Mere Resort on November 7 and that next year’s Vice Captain and the Captain in 2018 would be Tony Gregory who was Captain at Heaton Moor.

The evening was brought to a close by Brian Newbold with an entertaini­ng speech as ‘The Man from the Coal Board’.

The Alderley Edge Winter League matches featuring profession­al Charles le Sueur and the Vice Captain are played each week and in the latest two fixtures they came out on top.

They cruised to a 5/4 win over Mike and Peter Davies and this was followed by a closer 3/2 win over Bob Anderson and Andy Dibble.

A 9-hole Stableford at Alderley was won in both divisions by 22 points posted by Keith Doyle and Steve Bennett.

A Winter Stableford was had the divisions topped by Dave Snell and Brian Jones, both with 21 points.

Singles Stableford action at Wilmslow had Andrew Ferns in firm control with 43 points from Greg Dobbie 40 and Anthony O’Rourke, Nigel Stewart, Tim George and Ian Menzies, all 39.

A Seniors Winter League Stableford at Styal was won by Alan Beckett with 41 points, two more than Alan Lines, Robert Lynn and Geoffrey Proctor.

In a Sunday Stableford at Styal Howard Rice was a clear winner with 40 points from Steve James 37 and John Molloy and Patrick Sharrocks, both 36

It was closer in a Saturday Stableford at Styal with Chris Hart winning division one after a cpo on 43 points with Mike Burchell, one more than Simon Geddis.

In division two Andrew Murray had the score of the day with a big haul of 45 points taking him two clear of John Hall and Nick Gillings.

The latest round of the Styal Ladies Winter League was won by Enid Laverty with 20 points, one more than Claire Whitney.

The Saturday Stableford at Shrigley Hall had Graeme Nimmo top of division one with 38 points from Steve Brooks and Andy Atkinson, both 36.

In division two Richard Park was outstandin­g with his 43-pointer taking him home from Michael Lisle 39.

A Thursday Stableford at Shrigley was won by Peter Duffy with 39 points, three more than Don Farquharso­n.

A ladies Par competitio­n at Prestbury had division one being won by Nicky Markland on + 2 from Monica Brewers + 1 and Linda Buckley and jean Duncan, both level par.

Jenny Purves topped division two with +2 from Helga Henry +1 and Helen Bolam level par.
