£4k is latest from fundraising pals
AGROUP of generous friends have raised more than £4,000 for an Alzheimer’s charity.
‘Friends That Do’ is made up of Lorraine and Kevin Wilshaw, Dennis and Karen Meszaros, Graham Burgess and Dave Oakes, all from Macclesfield, who teamed up seven years ago to raise money for a friend’s poorly son.
They have since raised £10,000s for the Macclesfield community, choosing a different charity each year.
This year the Alzheimer’s Society will benefit from £5,480.24 thanks to two charity events organised by the pals.
More than a hundred walkers took part in a mass walk, which saw them cover 10 miles and 10 pubs in return for a donation of £10, which was supported by McCarthy Coaches. And 20 teams entered a charity golf tournament at Macclesfield Golf Club, which was followed by a raffle at the Bruce Arms.
Lorraine explained: “We are just a group of friends who want to give something back. We originally started because a friend of ours’ son was very poorly, so we raised some money to send them on holiday. Then people started asking if we were going to do it again, so we thought ‘why not?’.
“We’ve paid for two guide dogs, we donated money to the Bosley disaster and we’ve helped fund a special helmet for a little boy who was born with a deformed skull.”
Next year’s chosen charity is The Christie Hospital.
The friends held a raffle at the Bruce Arms on Sunday, December 11, and there is a short winter walk around the parks of Macclesfield planned for Tuesday, December 27, starting at the Bruce Arms.
Lorraine added: “The walk is open to anyone who wants to do it.
“We’re starting at 11am at the Bruce Arms on Crompton Road, so anyone can just come along.
“This time we’re asking people to donate £5, because it’s about a five mile walk taking in five pubs.
“All the pubs are dog friendly so they are welcome too.”
The walk will begin at the pub on Crompton Road, and pass through South Park, Windmill Street, Victoria Park, Sparrow Park, West Park and back to the pub.
