HELEN Marten was last week named the winner of the prestigious Turner Prize, which generated a lot of discussion about her work. Joan-Marie Williams: Well done Helen. Steph Jackson: How proud I am of our Macclesfield artist. Tony Jackson: Great news. Roland Rae: I’m sure she painted my picture of the town hall 10 years back. Primrose Ashcroft: £25,000 for that? Looks like a few random items just thrown together in five minutes. John Cole: I know I think I’ve lost my way somewhere. I’m thinking of emptying the contents of a Hoover bag in the middle of the Tate Modern and seeing if some muppets with more money than sense will make me an offer. Zofia Roginska: You might not like contemporary art but art isn’t supposed to be beautiful, it’s supposed to mean/represent something. John Cole: All art is subjective. Each of us is only able to see the world through our own eyes so that is a valid personal opinion. Objectivity is the artist’s cop out. Basically unless we can objectively prove that something has no value or merit anybody is free to call themselves an artist and class what they create as art. Liz Worthington: It’s a work of art that’s worthy of winning the turner prize, a prize for contemporary art. You don’t have to get it, it just needs to make you think. Bridget Barret: The Turner prize? Lol! I’m going to enter next year – going to make a simple white sign with black letters on it. It will read – The Turner Prize. Want to bet I will win? This isn’t even funny anymore, it’s much like Haiku poetry where the wording has been so limited that it actually becomes plainly and simply – stupid. Angela Hogg: Just seen her on the news. She was so humble and shared her prize money. I didn’t know she was from Macclesfield! Well done Helen. Sue Guildford-Potts: I love that contemporary art elicits such passionate debate and yet every critical voice fails to realise they’ve become part of the conversation. Martin Smith: Well done Helen! Emilie Beck: Yey well done Helen!! Judith Cooke: Yes but what is it? Georgie Watson: Well done Helen! Jim McGuire: What a pile of old junk!!

KAVAN Maddocks has shown some positive signs of recovery after a touching tribute to him during a game at the Moss Rose. Donna Hill: I pray that he makes a full recovery. Joanna McManus: I hope he recovers well and soon. Xx Shirley Roit: Wishing him a speedy recovery. Lisa Wardle: Get well soon Kavan xx Jeanette Hackney: I hope he did and I hope he pulls through. You’ve got an amazing mum waiting for you.
