A wrecking job

- VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE SHELDAN KEAY

MACCLESFIELD Town picked up one of their most impressive wins of the season so far after a convincing win at Wrexham.

Goals from Danny Rowe, Mitch Hancox and Danny Whitaker ensured that the Silkmen took all three points at the Racecourse Ground.

The win saw Macc move up to seventh in the National League table, seven points off the play-off places with games in hand on some of the teams above them.

John Askey brought back Kingsley James for the game, replacing Paul Lewis, while new signing Ritchie Wellens was also on the bench.

Macclesfield nearly took the lead inside the opening minute of the game, as Hancox forced a good save out of Wrexham goalkeeper Luke Coddington.

The visitors continued to dictate play in the opening stages, and they nearly capitalised on a defensive mistake from Curtis Tilt, but the shot was deflected behind.

Wrexham began to create chances of their own as the half progressed, with Craig Ross needed to deny Gerry McDonagh.

Chris Holroyd was in a good run of form for Macc, and he nearly got on the scoresheet once again when his close range effort flew over the crossbar after 14 minutes.

Further chances fell for the likes of Jack Mackreth and Whitaker, but Coddington was proving to be a thorn in Macclesfield’s side after making a string of fine saves to keep the scores goalless at the interval.

It seemed inevitable that the Silkmen would take the lead in the second if they picked up where they left off before the break, and they managed to do just that when Rowe made the breakthrough on 52 minutes.

He managed to break clear of the Wrexham defence before firing past Coddington and into the back of the net to make it 1-0.

That goal from Rowe appeared to give Macc a boost, and it didn’t take them long to double their lead.

Hancox was the man to get it, taking advantage of an error in the Wrexham defence to slot home and score his first ever goal for the club.

Now holding a comfortable 2-0 lead, Askey turned to substitute’s bench, bringing on Richard Brodie and Jack Sampson for Holroyd and Mackreth.

Silkmen captain Andy Halls went close to getting on the scoresheet when his dangerous cross intended for Sampson ended up heading goalwards, with Coddington needed to punch it clear.

There was nothing he could do a few minutes later though when Macclesfield eventually got their third goal of the evening.

A good run forward by James allowed him to play in Whitaker, who turned the ball home from close range to make it 3-0.

It looked like Wrexham may be able to pull one back and get a consolation goal when Rekeil
