It’s high fives for busy MBBC

- BOXING

MACCLESFIELD Boys’ Boxing Club were busy on Friday as they had five boxers competing at two separate venues.

First up was Joe Straw fighting at a Boxfit ABC show in Northwich, as he went up against Louis Stevenson from Astley VIP Boxing Club.

It was a really good bout that was downgraded to a skills contest at the last moment, but both kids boxed well, with Joe looking the more confident and stronger of the two, making it a great little display from both to kickstart the proceedings.

Next in action was Danny Hibbert, as he faced Bailey Dalton, who was also representing Astley VIP.

This was an excellent contest, as the tall, rangy Hibbert was against a stocky opponent in Dalton. Hibbert wasn’t taken any chances this time and went straight to work, showing control and scoring nice clean shots.

It was scrappy at times but there was no stopping Hibbert, as he showed the audience what boxing should be about.

Both kids gwere iving it their all and neither was giving an inch, but it was Hibbert that caught the judges’ eyes as he was awarded a unanimous decision.

Last up was Harry Horne vs Jonasz Dlugoleski, who was also from VIP. This was a very fast paced bout as both lads stood toe to toe and proceeded to knock hell out of each other from start to finish. Horne was showing more heart in the third, throwing more shots as they both tired.

It was an excellent contest with the whole crowd on their feet and it ended in another unanimous win for Horne.

It was a good night for MBBC, with ex-national champion Peter Bebbington making his debut as a coach, giving something back to the club in return for all the support he received when he was boxing.

The other two MBBC fighters in action on Friday were competing at Stockport College, and up first was Noel Straw against Kaiden Frimpong.

This was a nice bout to start proceedings as both kids were fairly matched and both gave a fantastic display.

The crowd was very appreciative as both looked like seasoned pros, and it was hard to imagine that they were both eleven years of age.

The decision was in Frampong’s favour on the night, which was disappointing for young Straw as he’s very competitive but both lads did brilliantly.

Next was Ant Walker, a heavyweight against Leo Smith from the Stockport Club. This was the last contest of the night and it proceeded to bring the roof off, as both lads gave their all.

Walker produced some nice moves, slipping the shots using his shoulder before following that up with nice counters.

Smith was trying his best to catch Walker coming forward with strong combinations. Both lads boxed well but Walker’s stamina dwindled in the third and this was where the bout was decided and Smith was awarded the victory.

It’s clear that if Ant upped his game and put the work in he’d be a force to reckon with, so this may well give him the incentive to train hard as boxing is one game you can’t play at.

It was a great night for MBBC, again showing what great talent there is in the town and why everyone should make the effort to come and support the team on their own show at Wilmslow Leisure Centre on February 3. Tickets are available from the gym, the Leisure Centre and each boxer has tickets for sale too.
