Macc Town renew outrageous FIFA bid

- STEFAN JAJECZNYK

MACCLESFIELD Town Football Club have renewed their tongue-incheek bid to host the 2026 World Cup after FIFA announced plans to expand.

The Moss Rose club made the outrageous bid to bring the prestigious competition to the Macclesfield stadium back in 2015.

And now the club have tweeted their dedication to the bid once again following FIFA’s decision to expand the World Cup to 48 teams, which would require three additional stadiums.

James Beckett, the club’s media manager, said: “Obviously we’re fully prepared for the tournament as it stands, but we thought it would be wise to look for some more venues as a result of the extra 16 teams. We still haven’t heard back from FIFA but we’re sure Gianni will be in touch soon.”

He added: “In the meantime we’d hope that the people of Macclesfield get to sample a game at the Moss Rose, a potential future venue for a World Cup Final.”

The bid includes a budget of £249.99 which covers ‘supplying new nets in all of the training facilities.

With the Quatari tournament facing controversy for its lack of air conditioning for the 2022 event, the Macclesfield bid helpfully makes provisions to counter the ‘whopping’ average June temperature of 14.1°C. They also propose matches be held at Tytherington playing field with its capacity of 200 with additional space for 14 dogs.

Alongside the World Cup ‘bid’, Macclesfield Town has reopened the Silkmen Campaign Fund. All of the contributions made by fans will go directly into manager John Askey’s playing budget, and in the event that the club is promoted to the Football League this season, Macclesfield will refund double the amount to the contributor.
