First aid volunteers honoured for work
ST John Ambulance volunteers were too busy doing what they do best to collect a trophy in recognition of their efforts.
The volunteers from the Macclesfield unit were providing first aid cover at events in Lower Withington and Macclesfield when their unit was due to be awarded the GrettonWatson Trophy, awarded to runners-up for the best unit in Cheshire.
But luckily for the team, unit manager John Bradbury was able to attend the awards ceremony at Chester on their behalf.
He was joined by the town mayor of Macclesfield, Councillor Alift Harewood-Jones, who was presented with the trophy by HM Lord-Lieutenant of Cheshire Mr David Briggs MBE, KStJ.
Coun Harewood-Jones said she was ‘pleased to receive the trophy knowing how much the unit had done in giving service in and around the town and the award was well deserved.’
John also received a certificate from Julian Williams, district manager of Cheshire East and Greater Manchester, to mark the 1,000 hours he gave to St John Ambulance this year.
The Order of St John is a major international charity with a worldwide footprint of over 400,000 volunteers and staff, delivering 16 million hours of volunteering each year to help people in the community.
Its work is centred on delivering first aid and care, along with education and training to improve community health.
The Macclesfield unit meets on Monday evenings at its HQ on High Street where members train in first aid.
