Askey looking for return to play-off picture

JOHN Askey felt Tuesday’s match against Dover was vital for his Macclesfield Town side.

The Silkmen were set to return to league action and host Dover at the Moss Rose as the Express went to print on Tuesday.

A victory would have seen Macc close the gap on play-off occupiers Dover to six points, with Askey’s men having two matches in hand.

With that in mind, the Silkmen boss was well aware of how big an opportunity it was.

“It’s a game we need to win, if we can win it then it puts us back in contention for the play-off places,” Askey told the club’s official website ahead of the match.

“Hopefully, we can perform like we did against Tranmere and then it’ll give us every chance of getting the three points.”

Tuesday’s match was a rearranged fixture between the two sides, following a controversial postponement back in November.

Macc were leading 1-0 when the game was abandoned due to fog on the hour mark, much to the dismay of Askey.

“We must put that into the back of our minds now,” he said. “In the previous game, we did well, but we’ve got to go and win it again so that’s all we can concentrate on.”

Macclesfield headed into the match having not played over the weekend, and Askey was hoping that may give the side a boost against Dover.

“Hopefully it can be in our advantage, because there has been one or two knocks in the squad,” he said. “So, if they can recover and be fit, then it would have been helpful, but we shall see.”
