New assistant chief constable starts work
A FORMER Macclesfield police officer has returned to the county force as assistant chief constable.
Darren Martland was a sergeant at the town’s station 15 years ago before rising up the ranks.
Now after spells at Merseyside and Cumbria the married dad-of-one has returned to Cheshire.
ACC Martland said: “When this post came up it was too good an opportunity to miss and I’m now looking forward to getting out and about and seeing the real challenges our officers face.
“Coming back to Cheshire is a nice feeling. It’s great to see the progress some staff have made and also meet lots of new people. I’ve received a very warm welcome from everyone.”
ACC Martland joined Merseyside Police in 1990 and spent time in uniform and CID before getting promoted to sergeant and joining Cheshire Police in 1999.
There he worked in a number of areas, in mainly uniform operational roles, including in Macclesfield.
He later moved back to Merseyside as area commander and qualified as Public Order and Firearms Commander.
He has a Masters in Criminology and Police Leadership and successfully completed the Strategic Command Course in 2013.
In 2015 he became Assistant Chief Constable at Cumbria before move back.
Chief Constable Simon Byrne said: “Darren has gained a wealth of knowledge and experience since he was last here.”
