Askey’s eyeing more new faces

- SHELDAN KEAY

MACCLESFIELD Town manager John Askey insists he is still targeting even more new signings to give his team the best chance of success this season.

The Silkmen have recently brought in several players, with Connor Jennings, Luke Summerfield and Adam Haworth joining the club.

It gives Macc a boost ahead of a busy period for them, as they battle for the play-offs in the National League and also compete in the latter stages of the FA Trophy.

Macclesfield were set to be in league action tonight (Wednesday) when they hosted Barrow at the Moss Rose, before another home game against Braintree on Saturday.

That is then followed by a trip to Eastleigh next Tuesday, before attention turns to an FA Trophy quarter-final showdown against Dulwich Hamlet on February 25.

The league and the FA Trophy are very important for the club, so Askey hopes for more arrivals but admits it may take a while to come to fruition.

“We still would like to bring in one or two in but we can’t at the moment,” he told the club’s official website.

“Ideally I’d like to cover every option because we have a great chance with the FA Trophy and the league. It’s an important time for us and we want to give it a good shot.”

Askey is pleased with the signings he has already made, and is backing them to be a success in the team.

“Connor is a local lad and did well the last time he was here. Every time I have seen him play he’s done well for Wrexham and Tranmere so hopefully he can replicate the form that he showed last time,” he said.

“Luke brings a lot of experience. He’s played in the league throughout his career so hopefully he can bring us some quality. He should fit in well with the way we play.”

There has been a blow for Macclesfield over the past week though, as two of the loan signings that arrived early in January have suffered injuries.

Danny Whitehead and Anthony Dudley are the players in question, and Askey admits that it is frustrating.

It’s a shame that we have lost two players. Danny Whitehead needs a hernia operation which will keep him out for a few weeks,” he said.

“Anthony Dudley has got a tear in his hamstring which will keep him out for quite a while too.”
