Juniors prove they are best by some distance
TAKING part in crosscountry races during the winter months is a great way for road runners from Macclesfield Harriers to keep fit all year round.
Having won the National Road Relay Championships in November, the under 15 girls’ team comprising Sian Heslop, Lauren Robinson and Steffie Moss were on great form and ready to brave the wintry mud.
The cross-country season has now ended with further success for the girls and other young competitors from Macclesfield Harriers.
In the Manchester Area Cross Country League, Sian Heslop won all five of the U15 girls’ races. Lauren Robinson (third overall) and Steffie Moss were consistently close behind in third and fourth places. Steffie became injured after the third race but Sam Kyriacou didn’t let the team down and ran well in every race to ensure team victory for the U15 girls. Lucas Parker was overall U15 boys winner in the Manchester League, with Finley Proffitt and Peter Goodfellow adding valuable team points.
Lucas missed a race due to illness so having a strong fourth team member in Joe Browne ensured the team kept their overall points high to take second place.
The U11 boys were third, with strong performances from Hayden Blunn, Aadi Whitlock, Dylan McGrath and Phillip Goodfellow.
The Manchester League completes a fantastic season for the juniors with some amazing individual and team results in other cross-country events.
In January Sian Heslop won the U15 girls Cheshire Cross Country Championships and took second in the Northern Championships. Finley Proffitt and Lucas Parker also finished well up in both championships and Lucas won the U15 Derbyshire County Championships.
The Harriers also produced some top results in the North Staffs League. The U11 girls, U15 girls and U15 boys teams all won their series. The U11 boys finished second and the U13 boys finished third. There were individual medals for Lucas Parker (winner, U15), Finley Proffitt (second, U15), James Doorbar (second, U13) and Hayden Blunn (third, U11). Individual medals also went to Rebecca Dilworth (second, U11), Ruby Spencer (second, U13) and Lauren Robinson (second, U15). Considering all the junior teams and athletes together, Macclesfield Harriers were by some distance the strongest team in the league.
These successes are down to the hard work and dedication of all the runners involved, and also to the many parents and volunteers who helped with the club’s success.
