Town’s new team making big strides

- INLINE HOCKEY

DURING 2016 a group united by their love of ice and inline hockey decided to start a Macclesfield-based team.

Every week a group of individuals, initially, started meeting at the Multi Activity Centre (MAC) once or twice a week.

The sessions were made up of drills, skills and full matches, run by the club’s passionate coach, Roderick Zusker.

As word spread the team grew, new equipment was purchased and they found a new training facility, at Astra Zeneca’s Mulberry’s Centre, which allowed the progression to play with pucks rather than balls.

The early stages of 2017 has seen the team go from strength to strength, culminating in their first competitive outing recently.

The team travelled to Market Drayton where they competed in the West Inline Hockey C League. Macclesfield won their opening game 5-4 against Wrexam, were then narrowly beaten by Connah’s Quay 4-3, and finished in style by beating Loughborough 4-3 in the dying seconds.

The results on the day left them in second place in the league, and they were commended for a great start and also their team spirit. A great day was had by all of the players and spectators and the club look forward to competing in the league against teams from across the North of England.

The group currently meets every Wednesday from 9pm till 10pm at Mulberry’s, and also try to meet for additional sessions when time permits.

A spokesman said: “We are a passionate and very welcoming group, we have a well balanced group of around 20 players comprising of males and females aged between 18 and 50.

“The club is are always on the look out for new players of any standard. We ask that anybody who is interested in joining the team, or who would just like to try inline hockey for the first time, contact the club via our Facebook page.” Team Connah’s Quay Macclesfield Salford Wrexham Loughborough Crewe Hitmen Newport Knights
