Dad spared jail after stealing from his bosses

- STUART GREER

ADESPERATE dad has avoided prison after admitting stealing from his bosses.

Daniel James Thorley, 31, pocketed £1,790 while working at Euro Garages service station on Churchill Way, Macclesfield, a court was told.

The court heard he took the cash ‘in a moment of panic’ after he was threatened with eviction when he got behind in his rent.

At Stockport magistrates’ court, last week, Thorley, of High Street, Macclesfield, admitted theft. He was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison suspended for 18 months. He must also do 100 hours unpaid work.

Tina Cunnane, prosecuting, said: “The defendant worked at the garage’s shop between March 16 and June 3, 2016.

“The manager noticed a discrepancy with the amount of money taken by the till and what was in the safe.

“He looked at CCTV and saw that between May 6 and 29 the defendant took money from the till on multiple occasions but didn’t transfer it to the safe.”

Ms Cunnane said Thorley’s dishonesty came just months after he had been sentenced for fraud and theft when he stole £1,150 from his previous bosses, Bensons for Beds at Lyme Green retail park.

Addressing the service station theft, Robert Stewart, defending Thorley, said: “He was in arrears with his rent and had received threatening messages from his landlord saying that he would be evicted. In a moment of panic he stole from his employer to secure his accommodation. It was an extremely stupid thing to do. He was quickly caught out. He lost his accommodation anyway and ended up on the streets.

“It was a downward spiral and in February there was a suicide attempt. He failed and was sectioned for a short time.

“His new employers have been very understanding and supportive. This gives him faith for the future.”
