WE asked our facebook followers what they thought after revealing nine people have been taken to court litter offences following a council crackdown (Express, March 29,p3):

Anne Shaw Hough: ‘I think it’s a great idea but saying that there should of been a notice to say this was happening I bet they don’t get half as many in a bit so council will have to find another way to rip people of without warning.’

Dan Mayers: ‘People on here complaining there’s no bins. If you’re anywhere in the town centre, try walking another 20 seconds with your eyes open. Do you also drop litter in the countryside because there’s no bins out there?’

Sharleen Taylor: ‘Fining people for dropping cigarette butts? OK well provide ash trays along the roads for people to put them out in. Sounds ridiculous? Well there you go.’

Nikki Halloran: ‘I actually saw a teenage lass get an on the spot fine for chucking her cigarette butt on the floor, she was about four steps from a bin at the time. Just her bad luck that there was an enforcer there at that very minute she did it. Sometimes it is just laziness, and it’s unfortunately because of people like that why there are rules likes this being put in.’

Joseph Connor: ‘ Yes about time!! It’s not about money making, it is about punishing those who think they can just drop their crisp packet on the floor and not put in a bin like honest people would. It then costs money for someone to go out and pick up after these lazy people and if they just put their rubbish in the bin like the rest of us then councils would save money by not having to send litter pickers out. Just like you get fined if you speed in your car or talk on your phone when driving or drive in a bus lane. It is a form of punishment by taking away some of your well earned money for breaching rules which you could have spent on something else if you followed the rules.’

Jessica Anne: ‘Ridiculous and pathetic. Fines of £220 for dropping litter yet texting while driving its £200. Greedy council, I will continue to drop my litter if theres never any bins.’

Deborah Slaney: ‘ They want to take a walk down Brocklehurst Way and Middlewood Way were everybody throws there McDonald boxes and cups.’

Annie Barker: ‘Brilliant idea. Don’t like it don’t litter.’

Christine Claire MacKenzie: ‘About time. More bins, please.’

Karen Hyde: ‘Let’s have some bins please.’
