MORE than 60 people were hit with £100 fines in a month for not wearing seatbelts (Express, April 12) Here’s what our facebook followers thought: Tim William Hammond: Good. Don’t follow the laws then you deserve the fine. Kate Robinson: Beggars belief that some people actually don’t use their seatbelts in 2017. Matthew John Heeley: Click it or ticket! Jon Thompson: People who refuse to wear seatbelts clearly don’t believe in momentum. It makes me wonder what nonsense they do believe in. Sheila Smith: Obviously people with no sense. I always make sure everyone has their seat belt on in my car. Liz Hammond: People obviously still try to get away without wearing one. Why would you risk your life, fine them! Tony Mackin: Seatbelts just produce a false sense of safety. The best way to reduce accidents and injuries would be to require that every vehicle is fitted with a long, sharp steel spike just in front of the driver’s forehead. The improvements in driver care and attention would be rapid and dramatic. John Williamson: Many years ago, Volvo did a well controlled experiment that showed that drivers wearing seat belts took slightly more risks than drivers not wearing them. At the same time, an analysis of insurance statistics and health provider reports showed that drivers and passengers wearing belts suffered fewer life changing injuries and deaths than those not wearing belts, when measured by injuries per hundred thousand miles travelled. Take your pick. Richard Brookman: Voluntary for the driver, compulsory for the passengers.

Let the person taking the risks bear the consequences, if any.

Same with motorcycle helmets.

One point: when the seat belt laws were introduced, the overall casualty figures didn’t alter much.

The seat belt law just transferred injuries from the inside of the car to the outside; from the driver and passengers to pedestrians and cyclists.

Risk homeostasis, and all that. I always wear mine, by the way. James Pilkington: If you don’t want to wear one then it’s your own fault I don’t care if you fly out the window. Darren Metcalfe: I don’t feel right driving without a seat belt. David Ronnie Lovett: Must be just sat around the police station with not much to do so let’s get out and fine anyone who’s not apparently got a seat belt on! Austin Shackles: Of course, not crashing is also an option. If nobody crashed we wouldn’t need belts. Lesley Anne Baxendale: Like it or not, it’s the law. Flout it at you peril. I remember the law being introduced. It took a while for people to get used to the idea, but the number of deaths in road accidents dropped dramatically.

LOTS of readers reacted to our story about the British Heart Foundation charity shop being broken into for the third time in a year. (‘Anguish as charity shop thieves cause £13K bill’, Express, April 12) Kerry Ann Cleaver: Absolutely disgusting. Sian Hussey: This should not be happening once never mind three times.

It is absolutely disgust- ing stealing at all, never mind for a charity. These funds save lives and help pay for treatments that people can’t afford.

It’s just sickening I’d be distraught if I was working/volunteering there.

I hope all the volunteers and staff aren’t too traumatised.

Some absolutely vile people out there Andrew Bowen: Disgusting.....low, low people who did this!! June Ross: How did they get wind of the valuables being in the safe? Are they advertised somewhere for sale? Vivienne Landers: I’m disgusted with whoever did this! Laura Hughes: Could be the same scum that did it the last time, knowing they keep stuff there.
