Reunion bid 50 years after school closed

- STUART GREER

AFORMER pupil of a school which closed 50 years ago is looking to hold a reunion.

Beech Lane Primary School used to be in a building on Justice Street, Macclesfield, and was connected to St Michael’s Church.

But as the nearby Tytherington estate grew larger it was replaced with Marlborough Primary in 1967.

Now Peter Miles is calling for fellow former pupils to get in touch with a view to having a reunion.

Peter, 60, has shared a stunning picture of the entire school taken outside the church in 1962, in a bid to trigger interest.

Peter, a retired council officer who lives in Hurdsfield, said: “It is 50 year this year since Beech Lane primary school closed and a number of former students were thinking about commemorating it in some way.”

Peter has fond memories of his time at the school which originally opened in 1877.

He said: “Beech Lane was a small school so it was very inclusive. Because we were connected to St Michael’s which ran the youth groups such as scouts and Brownies, we were always together. It was really nice.

“I was 11 and in my last year of primary school when they closed Beech Hall. I remember it was at Easter, halfway through the year, so I only had one term in the new school before going to King’s School. I have lots of lovely memories of that time.” The school building still exists and is now the offices for a firm of architects. The playground is a car park.

Peter is calling for people to get in touch to share memories and photos, and to show interest in holding a reunion.

He said: “My sister and I are in that photo and we can name a high percentage of the other people in it. I would say that most of them are still alive and many of them still live in Macclesfield. It would be great to see some of those faces again.”
