Talented actress, 13, in Lowry stage debut
IT was a dream come true for King’s student Elouisa Webster who was chosen to appear in a National Theatre production.
Elouisa appeared on stage at The Lowry after successfully auditioning for the National Theatre Connections Festival.
The 13-year-old, who is from Macclesfield and a member of the not-forprofit youth theatre company CYGNETS, said: “Whenever I have been to The Lowry I have always said that’s going to be me some day and it happened, actually a lot quicker than I had imagined. It was wonderful.
“I wasn’t nervous, but I was excited and I’d love to do it again.”
The play was ‘#YOLO” by Matthew Bulgo, the story of an 18-year-oldwho is about to start university but is diagnosed with a brain tumour which propels him into an adult world before he’s had chance to enjoy his youth. Elouisa played the part of Molly, one of Jack’s closest friends.
Elouisa was joined by King’s technician Simon Leah who acted as sound engineer for all the performances.
Elousia was also cast as the lead in the school’s production of the hauntingly evocative Kinder Transport, which tells the story of a group of Jewish children who escaped the Nazi death camps to flee to Manchester.
She said: “I had no idea children were sent here before the war. They were the lucky ones, among the tiny numbers of Jewish children to survive, but the play makes you wonder just how difficult it was for them then and throughout the rest of their lives.”
Catherine Thompson, King’s Senior drama teacher, said: “It’s a powerful piece which resonates throughout history and offers us an insight into the plight of the Syrian refugees currently trying to resettle in Manchester as much as offering us a documentary on past tragedy.”
