Maths whizz wins

A BRIGHT stu­dent has won a re­gional maths com­pe­ti­tion.

Nathan Herbert, who is in year seven at Fal­li­b­roome Academy, has been pre­sented with the Ian Por­te­ous Award af­ter win­ning first prize in the Math­e­mat­i­cal Ed­u­ca­tion in Mersey­side (MEM)Open Chal­lenge 2017.

The MEM chal­lenge, which has been run­ning since the 1970s, was set up to de­vise, en­able and pro­mote maths.

It’s aimed at stu­dents in years seven and eight, and this year at­tracted 2,252 en­tries from 95 schools.

Nathan took part in the com­pe­ti­tion dur­ing half term, fully an­swer­ing eight chal­leng­ing math­e­mat­i­cal puz­zles.

He was pre­sented with his award at Liver­pool Univer­sity.

Nathan’s maths teacher Judith Simm, who en­cour­aged him to en­ter, said: “Nathan cer­tainly rose to the chal­lenge, his math­e­mat­i­cal skills out­classed not only his own peers but even stu­dents from the year group above!”
