Maths whizz wins
A BRIGHT student has won a regional maths competition.
Nathan Herbert, who is in year seven at Fallibroome Academy, has been presented with the Ian Porteous Award after winning first prize in the Mathematical Education in Merseyside (MEM)Open Challenge 2017.
The MEM challenge, which has been running since the 1970s, was set up to devise, enable and promote maths.
It’s aimed at students in years seven and eight, and this year attracted 2,252 entries from 95 schools.
Nathan took part in the competition during half term, fully answering eight challenging mathematical puzzles.
He was presented with his award at Liverpool University.
Nathan’s maths teacher Judith Simm, who encouraged him to enter, said: “Nathan certainly rose to the challenge, his mathematical skills outclassed not only his own peers but even students from the year group above!”
