Prestbury in front with gross score

CHESTER Golf Club provided a challengin­g course in pristine condition for the annual Junior Team Championsh­ips for the fourth time in the history of the tournament and they are delighted to host it again in 2018.

There was a good field of juniors from clubs across the county looking to finish in top spot and represent Cheshire in the National Finals at Woodhall Spa in August.

With the top two nett Stableford scores counting, Royal Liverpool GC set a strong target of 74 points with 37 points each for Patrick Delaney and Hayat Leung backed by 27 points from Matthew Dodd-Berry.

Their nearest challenge came from Ringway Golf Club who finished with 72 points from Ben Lee 38 and their Junior Captain Bronte Ward 34 followed by William Lord 25.

The team with the top gross score were Prestbury who posted 65 points with 34 from Tom Kirton and Matthew Delaney and Josh Turnock, both 31.

Bramhall were level on points thanks to Archie Palmer 33 and Ross Clewley 32 but lost out on a lower third score of 28 from James Cash.

The top individual gross prize was won by Prestbury’s Tom Kirton who followed up his great performanc­e by finishing as runner-up in the Cheshire match play championsh­ips with his 34 points taking him one clear of Bramhall’s Archie Palmer.

The best individual nett prize had Zach Smyth (Lymm GC) winning with an impressive 38 points, two more than Ringway’s Ben Lee.

Chester President John Clark received a plaque for the club for hosting the event and a set of Cheshire GU cuff links.

Wilmslow’s men enjoyed an Invitation Day and none more than M Cheetham and D Heggarty who led in with 47 points from C Elliott and I Hellens 45, J Hobson and S Grant 43 and A Corner and J Hudson 42.

Wilmslow ladies played for the Granny Trophy and it was won by Bridget Madden with 40 points ahead of Elizabeth Black and Sue Graveley, both 36 and Susan capper, Ann Pater, Pauline Clegg and Sue Charlton, all 35.

Monthly medal action for Alderley Edge’s men saw Max Exstein in unstoppabl­e form as he romped to victory in division one with 60 from Robert Anderson 65 and Bill Fisher and Gavin Elly, both 66.

In division two Mark Walker was also hot as he posted 62 to win by three shots from Ken Hall and Alex Campbell.

Edge’s lady stars Olwen Davies and Liz McGuire are doing the club proud by reaching round five of the national Daily Mail Foursomes by winning 6/5 against strong opponents from Styal.

Also in good form was Edge Lady Captain Yvonne Grundy who won a singles Stableford with an impressive haul of 37 points.

The third summer medal for Davenport’s men had David Bamford on top in division one with 66, two less than Graham Boon, Neil Jenkinson and Jon Lloyd.

Division two’s main man was Chris Souter with 67, one better than Howard Kennerley and Terry Wellerman and in division three Bill Dinnie was out on his own with 66, four better than George Cann.

In the Yellow tee Stableford competitio­n Rodney Wilson led in with 35 points from Allan Burck 34 and Anthony Leigh 31.

The Captain’s Charity Stableford at Prestbury had a tight finish with Gordon Reilly winning a cpo on 39 points from Conrad O’Neill and hot on their heels with 38 points were Alex Marshall, England Golf legend Sean Hammill, David Lees and John Kennerley.
