Lessons learned in Straw triumph

- BOXING

MACCLESFIELD MBBC attended a show in Rochdale to raise funds for the victims of the Manchester bombing.

So with 24 hours to the show the club was offered a bout for Noel Straw and as per usual he jumped at the chance to box, especially on this show.

Straw’s opponent was Lex Pedley from Fit 2xl from the Rochdale area so he had plenty of support.

The first round started quickly as Pedley went to work straight away, catching Straw off guard and as a result the first round went against him.

So after a quick chat in the corner the next round switched as Straw boxed behind his jab and started to pick Pedley off at ease although as the round went on Pedley tired and he started to use his head which the ref warned him about on numerous occasions.

Going into the third round, Straw had started to pull it back.

He kept to the game plan, throwing shots straight down the middle as Pedley was on the back foot and looked really tired and even more messy than in the previous round.

At one point the referee called for the pair to break – Straw stopped and stepped back as instructed but Pedley punched him, ignoring the referee’s instruction.

This annoyed Straw and he proceeded to up his work rate and ensured victory on a split decision which was well deserved after being caught switched off in the first.

Two lessons learned – make sure you’re ready to go from the first bell and always protect yourself at all times even when the ref shouts break!

It was a fantastic end to another season which has seen some great results for the Macclesfield club which has so much boxing talent in such a small place.
