Richards out to give Macc push

- SHELDAN KEAY

NEW Macclesfield Town signing Courtney Richards says he will do all that he can to try and help the club finally kick on to the next level.

Richards has made the move to the Moss Rose on a one-year deal after leaving National League rivals Torquay United, where he was their captain.

The midfielder joins a Macclesfield side that have had play-off ambitions over the past few seasons, but ultimately

Ihave ended up falling agonisingly short come the end of those respective campaigns.

Richards hopes to bring that to an end, with the 23-year-old believing that Macclesfield have what it takes to progress.

“For me personally think the consistency of the club has been immense and I think it’s just time to take that step further,” he told the club’s official website.

“The support system, the fan base and obviously the boss and the chairman are all trying to push in the right direction and that’s a really positive thing for the club.”

Richards came through the youth ranks at Brighton & Hove Albion before eventually joining Torquay, where he made 29 appearances for the team.

His season was somewhat disrupted by a knee injury, but he is now excited to put that behind him and link up with his new Silkmen teammates.

“I can’t wait to get going and I want to come back as strong as possible try and make pre-season as easy as possible,” he said.

“I wasn’t fully aware how interested the club was but I’m really happy that they were so it’s a really good platform for me to come and take my game to the next level and hopefully take the club to the next level.

“I had a conversation with the manager and he expressed what his views are, his philosophy and what he wants me to do. It is something I agree with, I like and I buy into so I look forward to getting it going.

“I like to bring my leadership qualities – I think there’s a lot of experience in the team so I think that will ultimately all generate into a positive movement so I’m definitely looking forward to bringing what I can to the table.”

Richards is the latest new recruit that Macclesfield boss John Askey has made in recent weeks, following on from the likes of Ryan Lloyd, Shwan Jalal, Jared Hodgkiss and Scott Wilson.
