Young golfing hopefuls head to Knott End

LANCASHIRE UGC will host the first North West Junior Open at Knott End GC on Sunday August 27.

Entry is available to young golfers with a handicap who live in Cheshire, Lancashire, Cumbria, Greater Manchester and Merseyside.

The handicap limit is 24 for boys and 28 for girls with an upper age limit of u18 on January 1 2017.

Back at Prestbury their men played for the Founders Vase and it was won in style by Russell Gardner with his nett 66 taking him clear of Marcus Barrow 69 and the lowest gross of 73 and Iain Bartholome­w and George Senior, both 70.

There was some good scoring from Prestbury juniors in the PGC Junior Trophy with Remy Miller winning a cpo on 41 points from Euan Wallis and Cameron Tebay third with 37.

Prestbury ladies played for the Maud Bason medal and Elaine McLean led in with 68 from Linda Buckley and Jane Campaigne, both 72.

Alderley Edge’s men played a Stableford for the JC Brown Bowl and David Atkinson was unstoppabl­e with 42 points, four more than David Read and Stephen Saunders.

Edge’s ladies were in medal mode with Sue Freeman top of the shop with 71 from Olwen Davies and Gwyneth Hall, both 73.

Wilmslow’s men played their August medal and Brian Tait topped division one with 68 from Rob Martin 69 and Simon Perry 70.

In division two Peter Skelton led in with 70, one clear of Ben Roberts and Matthew Cheetham.

Wilmslow ladies played for the Captain’s Prize and former Cheshire Lady Captain Pauline Clegg showed her class as she led in with 38 points, two more than Alison Iddon and Sue Martlew. In the accompanyi­ng nine-hole Stableford Pauline Whewell won a cpo on 14 points from Helen Blackwell.

A Saturday Stableford for Styal’s men had Hilton Alexander topping division one with 38 points, two more than Joe Blackburn and club legend Alan Bullock and in division two Giovanni Porro won a cpo on 35 points from Kevin Bocquet.

Styal seniors were also in Stableford action with David Hollick posting 40 points, one more than David Greenwood and Laurence Hodge.

A Sunday Styal ladies medal was won by Aileen Holohan with 80, one less than Claire Whitney.

The President’s Prize for Macclesfie­ld’s men was won by James Jones with his 67 taking him three clear of Kenneth Hall, club legend Rod Price and Pete Holmes.

Macc ladies played an EWGA medal for the Diamond Jubilee Cup and Judy Mutter led in with 74 from Wendy Higgins 76 and Cath Atkin 77.

It’s getting down to the wire in the battle to reach one of the biggest Inter Club ladies team competitio­ns in the region.

The Manchester and District Ladies GA have staged the Bell Cup for over 100 years and again a big entry of over 80 club teams have taken part in this season’s competitio­n that features the top seven players in the club competing against each other in the singles match-play format.

The aim has been to reach finals day, featuring the last four teams with morning semi-finals followed by the final in the afternoon, which will be hosted on September 1 by Bury Golf Club.

Prestbury Golf Club are already through after beating Accrington in the quarter-finals.
