Frank emerges as a rising star

HELSBY Golf Club provided an excellent and challengin­g course as they were excellent hosts for the Cheshire Junior Boys Championsh­ips.

There, close competitio­ns in all of the prize categories on offer and some new young talent made a big impression on the Cheshire officials.

Winning the Championsh­ip trophy was Jake Hibbert of Delamere Forest Golf Club after winning a cpo on 71 from club colleague Sam Long with another Delamere star Oscar Doran a shot off their pace.

It also needed a cpo in the competitio­n for the best nett return with Daniel Beck (Styal Golf Club) taking top spot with his 69 edging out Sam Long.

The u14 section uncovered a new star in Frank Kennedy of Presbtbury Golf Club as the 11-yearold seven handicappe­r won a cpo on 78 from Charlie Ashbrook (Brookfield GC), two more than Jack McKie (Carden Park).

Taking the top u14 nett prize was Aaron Lavelle of Ringway GC with his 92-22-70 return.

Cheshire President Sean Ritchie thanked Helsby Golf Club for their excellent support on and off the course, the players and their parents for thie efforts and the Cheshire officials for their great work behind the scenes to make this a golfing day to remember.

Wilmslow’s men were busy in a Par competitio­n for the Nowicki Trophy and Stephen Evans-Jones was an impressive winner with +5 from Nigel Stewart and David Foreman, Fergus Wilson and Gary Brebner all +2.

Wilmslow ladies were in Stableford mode and in division one Maureen Thompson was first past the post with 37 points from Janet Smith 36 and Elizabeth Black and Maureen Nicholson, both 34.

In division two Ewa Papis posted 36 points to finish clear of Bridget Madden 33 and Moira Campbell 31.

Alderley Edge’s men played for the JC Brown Bowl and it was won at stroll by David Atkinson with 42 points seeing him home from David Read 38 and Stephen Saunders 36.

Edge’s ladies played their August medal and Sue Freeman led in with 71 from Olwen Davies and Gwyneth Holt and Wendy Rule, all 73.

Davenport’s men played a medal for the Bill Jones Trophy and in division one Sean Leach won a cpo on 69 from Liam Glennon.

It was even closer in division two as a cpo on 71 was won by Neil Healey from Anthony Waterhouse and Dave Spibey and in division three Michael Tomlinson posted 68 to win by one shot from Jonathan Bowe.

Davenport ladies played a medal in three divisions for the Rose Bowl and in division one Madelaine Kingham posted a fine 67 to finish two ahead of Lindsay Webb.

Eve Stretton was the top player in division two with 75 seeing her home by a shot from Gillian Garbett and in division three

Deidre Newman also led in by a shot with her 70 taking her ahead of Michele Leigh.

Stableford action at Mottram Hall produced some big scores led in by David Deans 45 points from Criag Watson 43 and Martin Firth 42.

Prestbury juniors played a singles Stableford and Remy Miller won a cpo on 41 points from Euan Wallis with Cameron Tebay next in with 37.

In a Summer Stableford and Grandfathe­rs’ competitio­n at Prestbury Thomas Johnstone carded an unbelievab­le 49 points to finish out of sight of Malcolm Gibson 38 and Mark Mellor 37.

A Sunday Stableford for Prestbury ladies needed a cpo on 35 points to take Yvonne Hall into top spot from Caroline HarrisonCr­oft and one clear of Nicky Markland.

A Thursday Stableford at Shrigley Hall was won by Charles Edwin Green with 40 points, four more than Richard Burrow and Mark Johnson.

It was medal play on President’s Day at Shrigley with Callum Atkinson going clickety click to finish ahead of George Bresnahan 67 and Brian Hopkins 69.

Macclesfie­ld ladies played an EWGA medal for the President’s Prize and Wendy Higgins led in with 76 from Kay Atkin 77 and Sue Lawton 80 and Myra Clark had the best gross of 95 and also won the putting prize with 33.

A White Tee medal for Styal seniors saw class come to the top as Daniel Tuohy won a cpo on 68 from Harry Reid.

A Wednesday Stableford for Styal’s men was won by Khalil Musa with 34 points from Ken Mayoh 32, star junior Will Dodds and soccer legend Rick Worsley, both 31.

Styal Ladies played the latest round of the Summer Cup and Fiona Anderson was a clear winner with 19 points from Janice Whalley, Sue Grange and Pat Chadwick, all 15.

The final destinatio­n is in sight after the latest draw in the top two Manchester Alliance Inter Club Knock Outs for the Dunham Forest Trophy and the City Glass Men’s Foursomes, which are the biggest of their kind in the country.

In the Dunham Forest Trophy, which sees the club profession­al and the top six amateurs representi­ng their clubs in a competitio­n which had nearly 100 entries the holders Leigh are out.

They have dominated the competitio­n in recent years winning three times for a record number of five but they were beaten at home by Helsby who then lost at Pike Fold who now visit Reddish Vale in the quarter-finals

The rest of the draw is: Bolton Old Links v Blackburn, Manchester v Denton and Ringway v Harwood with the winners going through to finals day

In the City Glass Men’s Foursomes the semi-final draw is Didsbury v Houldswort­h and Ellesmere v Birchwood with the winners going through to the final at Blackley on October 1.

The Archie Preston Mixed Foursomes has also reached the semi-finals stage and sees Tytheringt­on v Brookdale and Shaw Hill v Breightmet with the final at Sale on Sunday September 24.

The Seniors’ semi-finals feature Ashton-underLyne v Fairfield and Chorley v Shaw Hill with Manchester again hosting the final on Friday September 22.

Finally the Williams BMW Junior Challenge Trophy will again be hosted by Lowes Park on October 8 with the winners from Davyhulme Park v Westhought­on and Manchester v Crewe making it through.
