Whitehead is relishing Macc return
DANNY Whitehead is relishing the opportunity to get his football career back on track after re-joining Macclesfield Town on a permanent basis.
Whitehead made the move to the Moss Rose late last week after his term at Wigan Athletic was brought to an end by mutual consent.
The 23-year-old initially departed the Silkmen to join Latics in January 2016, before spending the rest of the season on loan at Macc.
He found things tough at Wigan, but he now wants to get things back on track after re-joining Macclesfield.
“I am delighted to be back. It moved fairly quickly, as soon as I heard there was interest it was an easy decision for me,” he told the club’s official website.
“The gaffer has always been welcome for me to come back and it is going to be really important for me to get some game time so I am really looking forward to it.
“I haven’t played for a while through injury so I am excited to get back again. I have been in training for a few days now, I am feeling quite fit so hopefully I can be involved.”
Whitehead came on as a second half sub during Macclesfield’s disappointing 4-1 home defeat to Maidstone United on Saturday.
While that loss may have been a blow for Macc, Whitehead is confident that the team is capable of having a successful campaign.
“We are looking really strong at the moment we just need to keep it going and not fall short at the end of the season,” he said.
“There’s a few new faces and a few familiar faces but that happens. I know it is a strong team, they are a close-knit group.
“It is going to be hard to get back into the team but it is tough competition and that’s how it should be.”
Whitehead began his professional career with Stockport County back in 2011, making nearly 60 appearances and scoring six goals.
That form resulted in a move to Premier League side West Ham United in June 2013, but Whitehead failed to make any league appearances for the Hammers and he left in January 2015.
A short spell at Accrington Stanley came next, before Whitehead then joined Macclesfield that summer after a successful trial.
Whitehead could potentially make his next appearance in a Macc shirt when the team makes the trip to Torquay United on Saturday.
