Sister act hits peak to earn charity cash

- RHIANNON MCDOWALL

APAIR of young sisters pulled on their walking boots and climbed to the top of a mountain for charity.

Sophie Cox, seven, and sister Lizzy, five, took on the challenge to climb Snowdon and raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support after their neighbour and close friend Graham Mellor died from the disease.

The pair, who live in Bollington and go to Rainow Primary School, were joined by their parents, aunt and pet dog Archie.

The pair have so far raised around £900 through their Justgiving fundraising page.

Commenting on the page before the walk, Sophie said: “Me and my sister, Lizzy, have been training to walk up Snowdon with Mummy and Daddy.

“We want to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support because they looked after our friend Graham when he was very poorly. Sometimes training has been very tiring but we hope Snowdon will be very exciting.”

Amy Hulston, fundraising manager for Macmillan in Cheshire said: “I meet a lot of people wanting to raise money and awareness for Macmillan but when I met Sophie and Lizzy I was truly blown away by their passion to help.

“I know they were very close to Graham and with the help of their parents they could turn a very sad time into something positive, they have currently raised £877.

“It’s been an absolute pleasure to meet these beautiful young girls, I am so proud of what they have achieved.”

TWO friends are organising a coffee afternoon for Macmillan.

It’s the fourth year Francesca Robinson and Kayleigh Lewis have hosted the event for the cancer charity.

Francesca said: “We on the challenge, walking in the evening and embarking on weekend rambles in the Lake District and The Malvern Hills.

Jonathan Norris, head teacher at Rainow Primary School, said the girls worked hard for their challenge. He said: “This is a fantastic achievement. The girls have taken on this challenge with typical energy and enthusiasm, raising lots of hope to get our running total to £10,000. We bake all of the cakes we sell. We have a face painter and a raffle with more than 50 prizes from local businesses. We do this in our spare time as well as myself working money for such a worthy cause. We are all very proud of Sophie and Lizzy.”
