MACCLESFIELD Town took all of the spoils at Plainmoor after clinching a victory against Torquay United.

Scott Wilson got the only goal of the game shortly after half-time to ensure that his side took all three points.

The Silkmen have now moved up to eighth place in the National League table following the win, and manager John Askey was glad to come out on top.

“It was extremely pleasing. Especially after last week as we really dug in and I felt we should have, possibly, had some more goals,” he said.

“I thought we really deserved the win, and I was particularly happy with the clean sheet – it was important after last week to bounce back in that manner.”

Askey made three changes to his Macclesfield team, with Danny Whitehead and George Pilkington coming into the side, while Jared Hodgkiss finally made his debut after recovering from injury.

Torquay were lively in the early stages, with both Jennison Myrie-Williams and Rhys Murphy going close.

Macc also had chances at the other end, as Whitehead forced Vincent Doral to make a good save with his feet.

He was again called into action just before the break, tipping the ball over the bar after an effort from Ryan Lloyd.

Torquay had the first chance of the second half when Shwan Jalal saved a header from Murphy, but moments later Macclesfield made the breakthrough.

Wilson was the man to get the goal, capitalising on a mistake from Myles Anderson before rounding Dorel and slotting the ball home to score his fifth goal of the season.

The Gulls looked to immediately respond, and nearly managed to do just that when captain Josh Gowling put a header wide when he maybe should have done better.

The hosts continued to push forward though, and Jalal was required on numerous occasions to keep Torquay out and ensure that Macclesfield held on to their lead.

Elliot Durrell then nearly doubled the lead when he tried his luck from distance, but Dorel was proving to have just as impressive a game as Jalal, and made a smart stop to tip the ball over the bar.

Torquay threw plenty of bodies forward in the closing stages as they tried to get something from the game, but Macclesfield defended well and the team held out to earn all three points and pick up their sixth league win of the season.
