Husband accused of detective’s murder

THE husband of a police detective found dead in a lake has appeared in court accused of her murder.

Mum-of-three Leanne McKie, 39, was found dead at Poynton Park on Friday.

Her husband Darren McKie, 43, who is also a serving police officer, has been accused of killing her at their home in Burford Close, Wilmslow, last Thursday.

He appeared at South Cheshire Magistrate­s Court in Crewe yesterday (Tuesday, October 3).

Mr McKie, who was brought to court from custody and was dressed in a grey sweatshirt, spoke only to confirm his name and address during the brief hearing.

Rachel Barber for the prosecutio­n asked for the case to be sent to Chester Crown Court this morning (Wednesday, October 4) for a bail hearing.

The defendant was remanded in custody.

Police were first called to the lake at Poynton Park at around 3.45am on Friday (September 29) to reports a body had been found in the lake at Poynton Park.

A police cordon was put in place at the scene and there were a number of cordons in the Poynton and Wilmslow area.

Det Insp Adam Waller said: “We are doing everything we can to establish the exact circumstan­ces of what has happened.

“I would urge anyone who may have witnessed what happened, saw anything suspicious or unusual or has any informatio­n which could assist officers with their enquiries to contact us.”

Residents reacted with shock at the incident in the park, off South Park Drive in Poynton, which is popular with dog walkers and for hosting community events.

A 63-year-old resident of Vicarage Lane, who has lived on the road for 15 years and who asked not to be named, said: “It’s quite scary and disconcert­ing.”

Anyone with informatio­n is urged to contact police on 101 quoting incident 93 of September 29.
