Miller shines on Cheshire debut

THE U16 Boys teams from Cheshire and Lancashire showed great promise and skill as they played some exciting golf in an excellent competitio­n at Didsbury Golf Club.

It was a highlight day for Cheshire’s Remy Miller (Prestbury) as he played his first county match after winning selection for England u16 team to play Scotland.

He was congratula­ted on his selection on the first tee by Cheshire President Sean Ritchie before he played his singles match against Matthew Jackson (Southport and Ainsdale) and a 4/3 win brought his team back to within a point of Lancashire who had won the morning foursomes by 3-1 with Cheshire’s point coming from Oscar Doran (Delamere Forest) and James Ashfield) Delamere Forest).

Cheshire drew level as Jake Hibbert (Delamere Forest) won his match also by 4/3 over Grady Rogerson (Royal Lytham and St Annes).

Lancashire regained their two-point advantage with wins for George Holland (S and A) and Josh Fallows (Royal Birkdale).

Sam Long (Delamere Forest) and Greg Osborne (Delamere Forest) won their games to again bring the teams level and it was down to the final hole in the remaining matches to decide the outcome of the match.

Lancashire holed a long putt to win one of the games and then a threeputt from Cheshire saw James Andrews (Pleasingto­n) and Ryan Anderton (Chorley) win over Nathan Newton (Upton-by-Chester) and Ryan Owen (Styal).

Cheshire official Andrew Henshall said: “It was a long but enjoyable day as many of these boys should go on to represent the County Boys team in future years with distinctio­n and they all some excellent shots.”

Macclesfie­ld ladies played for the Life members Prize and Wendy Higgins was out on her own with 36 points from Julia Dunne 32 and Chris Gleaves and Kay Atkin, both 31.

Prestbury juniors played for the Bob Nish Trophy and Olivia Delany was out on her own with 45 points from Finn Manning 36 and Frank Kennedy 33.

A Par competitio­n for Prestbury ladies was won by Bell Cup team star Ellen Cail on +3 from Deborah Baker +2 and EmmaJayne Bolshaw who led in a clutch of players on -1.

Medal action for Alderley Edge’s men had division one led in by Simon Edbury with a sweet 65 from Andrew Slater 69 and C Hoyland and Mike Troup, both 70.

In division two Paul Gosling was the main man with 64 from John Kendrick 66 and Brian Pennington 67.

The Lady President’s Prize at Alderley Edge had Liz Maguire first past the post with 34 points from Gwyneth Holt 33 and Anne Thornber and Alison Roberts, both 32.

Davenport’s men played a medal for the Peter Grimshaw Trophy and in division one some good scoring was topped by Jon Lloyd with 65 from Phil Housley 66 and Gareth Winstanley 69.

Division two honours went to Stephen Jackson with 65, four less than Ian Ashcroft and Bernard Woolley and in division three Max Lauder led in with 72 from Richard Jackson 73.

Davenport ladies played an EWGA medal and in division one Danuta Silva reigned supreme with her 70 taking her six shots clear of Pat Brodie, Gail Hegarty, Christine Thwaites and Lindsay Webb.

It was closer in division two with Tina Brown winning with 75, one less than Amanda Jennings, Pat Massey and Eve Stretton and in division three Linda Paybody led in with 76 from Gillian Critchley 77.

A Thursday Stableford at Shrigley Hall was won by Peter Will with his 39-pointer taking him two clear of Richard Burrow and Sally Trussell.

In division one of the September monthly Stableford at Shrigley Paul Bishop was impressive with 40 points seeing him home from Richard Burrow 38 and Don Farquharso­n 36.

Division two honours were taken by Gary Bresnahan with 38 points one more than Howard Stringer and Michael Gibbons.

Styal seniors were in White Tee medal action and it needed a cpo on 67 to take Steve Weaver into top spot from Don Campbell and Terry Hooper.

Paul Withington led in a Wednesday Stableford for Styal’s men with 40 points seeing him home from Harry Craven 39 and Steve James and Tom Bloor, both 38.

Ben Tucker was untouchabl­e in the John Harrison medal at Styal posting a scorching 61 to finish ahead of James Brown 65 and Jack Bridgeman 66.

Lynn Guy led in a Styal Ladies medal with 74 giving her the edge from Helen Billington 75 and Olivia Brewster 76.

A Stableford for Wilmslow ladies had divi- sion one topped by Chrissie Harding-Roberts with 38 points from Liz Halle 37 and Maureen Nicholson 36.

Division two was led in by Sue Graveley with 39 points from Bridget Madden 38 and Heather Coxson and Heather Henshall, both 36.

Didsbury Golf Club were hosts for the latest Manchester Alliance meeting which saw the Bert Thompson Trophy as the main feature of the competitio­n.

Bert was a legend in the Manchester Alliance being secretary for many years and his club Didsbury Golf Club agreed to host the competitio­n each year in the memory of their former Captain.

The trophy was won in convincing style by Ashton-on-Mersey assistant pro Ollie Smith and his club amateur Steve McDermott as they racked up 44 points to claim their second successive Alliance trophy having won the Robert Wax Cup at Marple two weeks previously.

Next in the pro am with 42 points were Styal duo Alistair Waddell and Charles Herbert, one more than Swinton Park’s Ben Chambers and Max Baxendale.

Waddell was the leading individual profession­al with 39 points from Ollie Smith 37 and Nick Holmes (Bury) 36.

The top am am pair were Ellesmere’s John Kilner and Tony O’Mara with 41 points taking them three clear of Swinton Park’s Marcus Corfield and Dave Smith who won a cpo from Alliance legend Denis Durnian and his Chorley colleague Keith Liddle.
