Comedian’s teapot up for auction
A MACCLESFIELD antiques expert is hosting an auction for a teapot created in less than a minute.
The pot was created by comedian Johnny Vegas, who, as a talented potter, came up with a gimmick of creating a tea pot in just 60 seconds. His work has since appeared at the V&A and he appeared as a guest judge on the BBC’s reality show The Great Pottery Throw Down.
Johnny has donated the teapot to be auctioned at Adam Partridge Auctioneers, based on Withyfold Drive, as part of a fundraiser for the Clay College Stoke, a charity set up help bolster the pottery industry.
The benefit auction - which will take place on Friday, October 13 - also features work by the judges Kate Malone and Rich Miller, plus many of the contestants.
Johnny said: “Aesthetically it’s not going to be the most beautiful pot, but it doesn’t matter because it’s me expressing myself. I want people to look at this and say ‘I can do better than that’ and get off their backsides and go to a pottery night class.”
Antiques expert Adam Partridge added: “With the incredibly rich history of ceramic production in Stoke, it has been a crying shame to see the famous factories closing their doors one by one, with now very little production occurring compared to the dozens of major manufacturers operating in the past. With a saleroom so close by, and a devoted biannual auction of Studio Ceramics and Modern Design, it seemed to be the perfect opportunity to work with the college. The additionaldditional link with the Great Pottery Throw Down, means buyers will get a chance to own a pot produced by their favourite presenter or contestant, and who wouldn’t want a Johnny Vegas one minute teapot!”
The tea pot has been estimated to sell for at £150 - £200. The auction takes place at The Cheshire Saleroom from 10am. Contact info@ adampartridge.co.uk or call the office on 01625 431788.
