Choral society gets in tune for big church date
PRESTBURY Choral Society’s rehearsals are in full swing for their next concert in November.
The concert at St Peter’s Church will showcase an eclectic mix of works, including A Shropshire Lad, a new work by the choir’s accompanist and assistant musical director, James Pelham.
The piece was premiered last year at St Bartholomew’s Church in Wilmslow and will now be performed in Prestbury on Saturday, November 11.
It is a setting of six sections from the poem by A E Housman, and James was inspired by the experiences of a young man going to war, its effect on him and on those left at home.
Also to be performed is Silent Noon, a quintessential Vaughan Williams piece and one of the best known and most often performed of his songs, expressing the rapturous mood of lovers in both words and music.
Next, Calme des Nuits (Saint-Saens) is a demanding piece for choirs, while Fauré’s Requiem offers graceful melodies and floating harmonies, much-loved by choirs and audiences alike.
The concert will also include two English piano pieces played by James, while Andrew Mercer will play two French organ works.
The concert will start at 7.30pm and tickets cost £10, concessions £9, which are available on the door, from www. prestburychoral.uk or 01625 584337.
