King’s school makes top 100...again

-

THE King’s School has been selected as one of the Top 100 schools in the UK for cricket by The Cricketer Magazine, for the third consecutive year.

The world’s number one cricket magazine’s judging panel based their selection on the quality of coaching, the range of fixtures, extent of facilities and the quality of cricketers making their way into the professional ranks and league cricket.

King’s Head of Cricket Steve Moores oversees teams at First and Second team level, with the school also running teams from U11 through to U15, often with B sides and occasionally C sides. He said: “We are delighted to be chosen by The Cricketer Magazine as a Top 100 School for cricket for 2018. Generations of former cricketers remember their days playing King’s cricket with great affection and we want to maintain that long tradition.”

The Guide to the Top 100 Schools 2018 will be published in November. Simon Hughes, Editor of The Cricketer, said: “I heartily commend the commitment that the school dedicates in coaching pupils in our wonderful sport and hope it continues long into the future.”

Cricket at The King’s school dates back to at least 1865, with a photo of this particular year’s cricket team on show inside the pavilion, along with other team photos from the last 50 years.

In any one season the first team will play around 22 fixtures with teams coming from as far away as Edinburgh, but with annual derby matches against sides like Manchester Grammar School, very much the highlight.

The school has a main pitch on Cumberland Street, which is a prominent feature in the town centre, an allweather pitch on the Westminster Road site, three more grass squares at the Derby Fields, pitches for junior and girls’ cricket at Fence Avenue and extensive all weather outdoor nets at Westminster Road.
