Macc are edged out of cup tie
CHESHIRE AMATEUR SENIOR CUP AFC MACCLESFIELD 1 VAUXHALL MOTORS 2
AFC Macclesfield were knocked out of the Cheshire FA Amateur Senior Cup on Saturday after a narrow defeat at home to Vauxhall Motors.
The visitors were quick out of the blocks and were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box after 10 minutes. The ball was delivered and headed into the back of the Macclesfield net but fortunately for the home side, the referee spotted a push and disallowed the goal.
But in the 25th minute, the away side did get the opener. A lapse in concentration was pounced on by the speed of the Vauxhall left winger, who slotted the ball into the Macclesfield net.
Macclesfield stepped up a gear and started to push for the equaliser and in the 34rd minute it came.
Their 17-year-old midfielder Callum Evans picked up a poor clearance from a corner and thundered the ball into the bottom corner.
After the break, both teams were cancelling each other out and Macclesfield were proving to be a thorn in the side of Vauxhall’s ambitions to advance further in the competition, but on 60 minutes, unfortunately for Macclesfield, Vauxhall made it 2-1.
Macclesfield pushed for an equaliser as Vauxhall were doing everything they could to hang onto their lead, and after some dubious decisions by the officials, it was hard to see how they finished with eleven men on the pitch.
The game ended 2-1 but Macclesfield were not disgraced and can be proud of their performance against a team who, two years ago, were playing conference football.
